[Virtual] Education Committee Meeting: Creating Global Talent in Japan--What Can Business Do?

ACCJ member companies often cite the dearth of “global talent” in Japan as a drag on productivity and impediment to investment and growth. The most recent annual report of the International Institute for Management Development showed Japan slipping from 29th to 35th worldwide in the supply of global talent, falling well behind regional competitors such as Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Meanwhile, even before the pandemic hit, fewer and fewer young Japanese were studying abroad every year. The growing global skills gap will impede Tokyo’s aspirations to become a global financial hub, and continue to hold back the potential of ACCJ member companies and other global businesses active in Japan.
