More than six months have passed since Japan’s State of Emergency was announced on April 7, 2020. During this time, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the urgent need for digitization and administrative reform in Japan, which have become top policy priorities for the new Suga administration.
But Japan has been trying to modernize its administrative services for the past 20 years. How will this time be different, and what risks and opportunities will arise from the government’s renewed push?
We are honored to host Heizo Takenaka, former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications in the Koizumi Cabinet, prolific academic, and globally renowned expert on economics. As a political leader, Mr. Takenaka was instrumental in achieving the privatization of the Japan Post. He currently holds a number of high-profile positions in the private sector with Orix, SBI Holdings, and the RIZAP Group, among others.
