Event Overview
Nexon CEO Owen Mahoney will discuss innovation in the fastest growing and most technologically dynamic segment of global entertainment: online games.
Mahoney leads Nexon, one of the world’s largest videogame companies with a $20 billion market cap. Their multiple game franchises have generated lifetime revenue in excess of $1 billion by delivering double- and triple-digit growth decades after launch. Founded in South Korea in the 1990s, and now listed on the first tier of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Nexon employs a geographically and culturally diverse workforce of more than 6,600 people in Japan, South Korea, China, the United States, and Europe.
Now in his sixth year as CEO, Mahoney has helped Nexon overcome innovator’s dilemma—the tendency of once-disruptive companies to stop innovating and stagnate. He will discuss the importance of aligning boards, shareholders, employees, and consumers in a commitment to constant—and often uncomfortable—innovation in pursuit of growth. His talk will include suggestions for avoiding stagnation and how those approaches differ between Japan, the United States, and elsewhere.
One of a small number of Western CEOs running a publicly traded Japanese company, Mahoney is an American raised in San Francisco and educated at the University of California. He has worked in Silicon Valley but has spent much of his adult life in Japan.
