The Legal Services and IP Committee is pleased to be a supporter of this event hosted by the Ministry of Justice, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and the Japan International Dispute Resolution Center to discuss the recent changes to the Foreign Lawyers Act.  The law was amended in May of this year to:

  • shorten the time needed to become a recognized foreign lawyer (Gaiben);

  • authorize foreign lawyers to participate in specified arbitrations in Japan; and to

  •  enable joint enterprises between gaiben and bengoshi (to be implemented in November, 2022).

The Program is:

Part 1

Experiences of Professional Duties as Foreign Lawyer and Joint Corporation System

  1. Revision of Foreign Lawyers Act -  Mayo Kawazoe (Ministry of Justice)

  2. Q&A

Introduction of JIDRC-Tokyo Facility - Yoko Maeda (Deputy Head, JIDRC Facility Operation Subcommittee)

Part II

Activities to Activate International Arbitration / Mediation

  1.  Legal Systems on International Arbitration/Mediation

    • Revision of the Foreign Lawyers Act - Mayo Kawazoe (Ministry of Justice)

    • Revision of the Arbitration Act - Atsushi Fukuda (Ministry of Justice)

  2. JIDRC’s efforts to activate International Arbitration / Mediation - Naoki Idei (JIDRC Vice President)

  3. Q&A

Attendees in person will get a chance to see the new JIDRC Tokyo facilities via a socially-distanced tour.  These facilities were recently built to provide a state-of-the-art arbitration center in Tokyo.

In short, this is a great event for you to become better aware of the latest revisions and resources now at your disposal in Tokyo.
