The ACCJ and Asia Society Japan Center are delighted to host Mark Bookman, Ph.D. Candidate in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is studying the history and politics of disability.  Since 2018, he has been attending the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology as a Japan Foundation Doctoral Research Fellow.

Mark is currently finishing his dissertation on “Politics and Prosthetics: 150 Years of Disability in Japan,” examining the historical contingencies and geopolitical circumstances that have influenced how policymakers and members of the general public understand impairment and chronic illness in contemporary Japan. Outside of academia, Mark is an Accessibility Consultant where he has been advising policy makers and also serves as an advisor to the 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
