COVID-19 DERAILS JAPAN'S TOURISM BOOM

THIS IS A FREE VIRTUAL EVENT

SPEAKERS: Timothy Soper, Vice President Operations, Japan, Korea & Micronesia, Hilton
HOSTING COMMITTEE: Tourism Industry

COVID-19 has put the brakes on what had been rapid growth for Japan’s tourism industry. Some 32.5 million inbound visitors arrived in 2019—the highest annual number on record. The surge capped a 10-year stretch of rising numbers and the government was eying 40 million for this year on the back of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

But times have changed, and the industry is struggling. Hotels have been especially hard hit, and the ACCJ Tourism Industry Committee has invited Hilton’s Timothy Soper, who is vice president of operations for Japan, Korea, and Micronesia, to share his insight into the current situation and the future.

  • How are hotels dealing with the absence of guests?

  • What steps have been taken to preserve jobs?

  • What assistance has the Japanese government provided?

  • How does this compare with other programs in the APAC region?

  • How will Covid-19 change hospitality and housekeeping?

TImothy Soper will cover these questions and more as he discusses the prospects for recovery, what shape it might take, and whether Japan will ever see 30 million inbound visitors in a single year again.

A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
