Aerospace experience not required – Boeing is seeking an experienced bio-fuel, chemical, petroleum, or energy professional who is passionate about clean energy, sustainability, and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Japan.

Boeing Research and Technology Center (BR&T) - Japan supports Boeing business units by collaborating with local Japanese entities to execute technology co-development projects with a focus on sustainability initiatives. BR&T - Japan also supports the Japanese supply chain and customer base on various Boeing commercial programs and the integration of manufacturing technologies in Japan.

Our Global Technology organization in collaboration with Sustainability & Future Mobility has a new position for Sustainability Systems Engineer who is passionate about decarbonizing aviation. Specifically a Lead Research & Development Engineer focused on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technology and industrial development.

This role will be responsible for developing technology, partnerships, and governance that supports Boeing customers and industry adoption of sustainable airline fuels in Japan. Path finding and executing SAF technology strategy broadly by understanding customer and industry needs, constraints, and opportunities in support of the Japan market space and the Boeing Company's goals, priorities, and initiatives for sustainability and future mobility. Working with internal and external stakeholders to define and execute a SAF research portfolio which addresses currently undefined technical requirements across Japanese industry as they pertain to Boeing's customers, products, and supporting infrastructure.

This role must combine and leverage technical expertise and strong project management skills with long term technology strategy focused on industrial, academic, and government partnerships. The candidate must also possess proficient business acumen, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be a confident, self-motivated individual who is comfortable with ambiguity and critical thinking.

Technical background shall include one or more fields pertaining to biofuels, conventional fuels, chemical engineering, electrification, aerospace propulsion, electronic vehicles, systems engineering, or similar.

Professional experience shall be based in Japanese industry and include one or more fields pertaining to chemical, energy, electronics, EV automotive, aerospace propulsion, or similar. Japanese industrial experience preferred.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Lead a team of engineers in development of scope of work and execution of technical studies and research and development aligned to Sustainability & Future Mobility objectives.
Coordinate sustainability research projects, together with fellow subject matter experts and global leaders focused on Sustainable Airline Fuels (SAF) and the related industry.
Define and support development of Sustainability & Future Mobility technology roadmap through integration of key findings and technical models developed in the studies.
Provide technical, business and integration leadership for the development and execution of project or team plans.
Provide SAF subject matter expertise, inform and guide the company on SAF research projects. Define, shape, and deliver strategic SAF projects and SAF program elements to meet objectives.
Work on development and adoption of policies to foster commercialization and usage.
Effectively communicate activities internally at BR&T-Japan and in close coordination with BR&T Global Tech colleagues working on Sustainability research projects.
Partner with relevant colleagues around the globe to develop and advance Boeing SAF strategy.


Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Master’s degree or higher in an engineering or technically relevant field – chemistry, physics, or electronics preferred.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in Japanese industry in fields pertaining to chemical, energy, electronics, EV automotive, aerospace propulsion, or have deep and wide channels in those fields.
Experience with technology portfolio and technical project management principles / best practices.
Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with research institutions, industry partners, and technology stakeholders.
Ability to effectively communicate complex topics to various audiences using range of mediums.
Experience working in a distributed environment while balancing multiple tasks across multiple teams.
Team player with a passion for sustainability and enthusiasm for the aviation industry.
Conversational in both written and verbal English.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
phD in an engineering or technically relevant field – chemistry, physics, or electronics preferred.
phD and minimum 3 years’ experience in Japanese industry in the chemical, energy, electronics, EV automotive, or aerospace propulsion.
Advanced understanding of the aviation industry’s commitments to decarbonization.
Strong business acumen to assess strengths and weaknesses of projects developed in the aviation sustainability space.
Ability to build relationships to gain support and commitment from promoting ideas with enthusiasm, conviction, and assertiveness
Fluent in both written and verbal Japanese.

Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, physics or chemistry (Masters required) and typically 3 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+5 years' related work experience).

The selected candidate will be required to work on-site (with some flex) at Boeing Japan’s Nagoya office.
