ACCJ Applauds Agreements to Foster a Stronger U.S.-Japan Economic Alliance

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) applauds the Governments of the United States and Japan for the initiatives outlined in the U.S.-Japan Joint Leaders’ Statement announced by President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida on April 10, 2024.

These commitments will strengthen the bilateral trade and economic partnership and bolster collaboration on key areas of critical and emerging technologies, defense, economic security, climate action, and healthcare, further contributing to the goals of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). The ACCJ welcomes these new partnerships in areas such as green and digital transformation, supporting artificial intelligence research and startups, and investing in educational exchanges and human capital, which will deepen ties between U.S. and Japanese businesses in the years ahead.

The ACCJ actively supports U.S.-Japan collaboration on several priorities outlined in the agreements, including:

  • Digital Transformation (DX) to develop a world class bench of digital talent to scale DX across economies, adopt cybersecurity best practices, and adhere to international standards around cloud and privacy.

  • Economic Security to reinforce U.S.-Japan economic collaboration via economic security measures that are transparent, fair and leverage global best practices to cooperate on emerging technologies.

  • Climate Action and Sustainability to promote the development and adoption of renewable energy technologies to reduce the carbon footprints of both economies.

“The U.S. and Japan have one of the world’s most important alliances and are the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. As the leading voice of U.S. business on the ground in Japan for over 75 years, the ACCJ and our members will continue to work to make the commitments in these agreements a reality, boosting the economic growth of both our countries and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific (FOIP),” said ACCJ President Victor Osumi.
