External Communications and Media Manager

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) is a unique organization with a 75-year history of working with the US and Japanese governments and the world's largest and most influential companies to strengthen the US-Japan relationship.

The ACCJ is a network of business executives and thought leaders from across Japan and the US. Positions at the ACCJprovide high visibility and are ideal for high performers with strong interest in policy and international relations and seek to gain expertise and experience in those areas.

The ideal candidate is a native Japanese speaker, with a strong interest and passion in the U.S.-Japan relationship and politics, and brings five or more years of work experience in either the private or public sector.

Overview of position

This position is responsible for ensuring the ACCJ’s voice and brand are strategically represented externally, by identifying opportunities to showcase ACCJ thought leadership in the media, as well as at external events. This position will support the ACCJ advocacy process by drafting and editing Japanese language communications and position papers. Experience translating documents between English and Japanese is required. 

The External Communications & Media Manager must work under tight deadlines, manage multiple tasks and support a fast-paced working environment. This requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and communications skills.

This position is based in Tokyo - currently working from the office and remote locations throughout the greater Tokyo area. Candidates must reside in Japan at the time of application.

Job Description

  • Strategically manage the ACCJ’s media relations function

o   Build and maintain targeted media lists, and nurture relationships with key reporters

o   Identify media opportunities and ensure positive coverage for the ACCJ

o   Manage day-to-day media relations/requests

o   Collaborate with ACCJ subject matter experts in a timely manner to determine appropriate media responses via various channels

o   Research and track ACCJ’s presence in Japanese and international media

  • Provide Japanese language communications support

o   Research, write, and edit Japanese language advocacy documents and external communications

o   Translate Japanese/English documents; check and edit translations provided by external parties

o   Update the advocacy section of the ACCJ website

o   Create news posts and support communications on advocacy, including press statements, talking points, and Q&A

  • Coordinate and attend meetings/events with GOJ and business organizations

 

Qualifications

  • Exceptional Japanese language capabilities (must be native-level) and business-level English-language skills

  • Strong writing, editing, research, organizational and logistical coordination skills 

  • Passion for the U.S.-Japan relationship and international business and politics

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in the public and/or private sector; Background in journalism and/or public relations preferred

  • Must be a team player and willing to collaborate with colleagues across departments

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic computer literacy is required, FileMaker is a plus

  • Bachelor’s degree; Graduate degree preferred
